Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea You Can Look for Now:

Since so many patients do not realize they’ve been suffering from sleep apnea, it’s important to recognize
symptoms before a more serious health problem develops. Here is a list of the most common sleep apnea-related symptoms:

  • Dry mouth and/or sore throat
  • Morning headache

During the day:

  • Lack of energy
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Fatigue and daytime sleepiness and/or decreased daytime performance
  • Lack of sex drive
  • Difficulty with concentrating and memory
  • Depression or anxiety

In the nighttime:

  • Getting up frequently to go to the bathroom
  • Waking up in the night choking or gasping for air
  • Stopping breathing during sleep
  • Snoring
  • Restless sleep
  • Night sweating

Physical findings may include:

  • Increased collar size (>17.5″ in men, >15.5″ around in women)
  • High blood pressure requiring several medications for control and readings higher in the morning than in the afternoon
  • Swelling of the feet or ankles

Over time, sleep apnea symptoms can begin to seriously affect your life and, in the long term, these symptoms can contribute to serious health risks such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

We can begin to effectively manage your sleep apnea with solutions such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance. If you are suffering from the effects of sleep apnea and wish to discuss your treatment options, contact Vancouver Sleep Solutions at 604-558-0055 or you can print off the referral form and take it directly to your physician or specialist.
